The timing of your booking matters more than almost anything else with Air Transat. Europe summer flights, think Paris, London, Lisbon, Barcelona, are consistently cheaper when booked 3 to 6 months out. Book in late January or February for a June departure and you'll pay noticeably less than someone booking in April. The same logic applies to winter sun: book Caribbean and Mexico flights in September or October for January travel.
Air Transat publishes periodic promo codes at airtransat.com/en-CA/deals/promo-code, offering discounts on select routes and booking windows. These codes apply to the base fare at checkout on airtransat.com and are route-specific; check the terms carefully before booking to confirm your destination is eligible. You can also check GrabOn Canada for verified Air Transat promo codes before you finalize any booking.
Sign up for the Air Transat newsletter to receive seat sale alerts, flash sale codes, and VIP offers before they're announced publicly. Flash sales are time-sensitive, and being on the list means you see fares before they're shared more widely.
If you're not leaving from Montreal or Toronto, the Air Transat and Porter Airlines joint venture is worth knowing about. Porter feeds passengers from smaller Canadian cities into Air Transat's network, creating connections that weren't available before. It's also how you can currently use VIPorter points toward Air Transat flights. Search Air Transat flights directly on flyporter.com to see available redemptions.
Pick your fare class carefully before comparing prices. Eco Budget on South, Caribbean, US, and domestic Canadian routes no longer includes a free carry-on as of July 2026. You get only a personal item that fits under the seat. If you're bringing a carry-on and a checked bag, run the numbers against Eco Standard before assuming Eco Budget is cheaper. Eco Standard consistently delivers better all-in value for trips where you need luggage.
Fly midweek where possible. Friday and Sunday departures tend to carry higher fares on Air Transat routes than Tuesday or Wednesday flights on the same route. That gap can be meaningful on a transatlantic ticket.
Add Option Flex at booking if your plans have any chance of changing. The add-on lets Economy Class passengers modify or cancel with reduced penalties, far cheaper than absorbing a full non-refundable fare loss.
Air Transat's four Economy fares: Eco Budget, Eco Standard, Eco Flex, and Club Class. Look similar on price comparison sites but carry very different inclusions.
Eco Budget: Includes only a personal item (43 x 13 x 31 cm) on domestic Canadian, US, and South/Caribbean routes. However, for transatlantic flights to Europe, Morocco, and Peru, Eco Budget remains a stellar deal. It still includes both one free overhead carry-on bag (10 kg) AND your first checked bag (23 kg) completely free.
Eco Standard: Adds a free carry-on across all routes globally. On transatlantic routes, it adds a free checked bag. Changes can be made for a fee.
Eco Flex: Includes a carry-on, standard seat selection, and up to two checked bags, plus free changes or cancellations up to 24 hours before departure.
Club Class: Premium economy cabin experience. Includes priority airport services, premium seats, an upgraded 15 kg carry-on allowance, and two checked bags up to 32 kg each.
Air Transat heavily penalizes procrastination when it comes to luggage. Checked bag fees follow a strict timeline structure:
Destination Route | Prepaid Online (>24 Hours Out) | Last-Minute / Airport (<24 Hours Out) |
Domestic, US & South | CAD $35 | CAD $50 - $60 |
Europe & Peru | Free (First Bag) / CAD $75 (Second Bag) | Free (First Bag) / CAD $100 (Second Bag) |
A third checked bag will run a steep flat rate of CAD $225. Always add your expected luggage online at least 24 hours before departure to lock in the lower tier rates.
While Air Transat heavily promotes its Flex Pay installment plan at checkout to break ticket costs into 3-to-11-month fixed payments, Canadian travelers need to read the fine print. The financing program is powered by Upgrade and is exclusively available to US residents possessing a valid US Social Security number and US mobile phone plan. If you are booking from Canada, you will need to pay upfront via standard credit or debit options, or look into specific payment plans tied strictly to Transat Vacation Package bookings.
It is easy to mix up Air Transat's flexibility programs, but they apply to entirely different booking types:
For Flights Only: Flexibility is built directly into your fare class. Choose Eco Standard if you want the ability to change your dates for a fee, or Eco Flex if you want completely free modifications and cancellations.
For Transat Vacation Packages: If you are booking a flight-and-hotel holiday bundle, you can buy Option Flex Standard (Economy packages) or Peace of Mind (Club Class packages). These allow you to cancel your entire vacation package for a travel credit, change your hotel, or change your departure dates up to 72 hours before you leave.

Wave Month | January | Canada's travel industry's biggest booking month for discounted sun and Europe packages. Air Transat and travel agents run their strongest winter sun promotions during Wave Month, targeting Caribbean, Mexico, and early-spring Europe bookings. If you missed Christmas pricing, this is the next best window. |
Winter Sun Seat Sales | September–November | The best time to book Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America flights for December–February travel. Fares to Cuba, Dominican Republic, Cancun, and Jamaica are lower in this window than they'll be once peak booking season hits in late November. |
Europe Summer Sales | January–March | Book spring/summer transatlantic flights in this window for the lowest available fares to Paris, London, Lisbon, Barcelona, and Rome. Waiting until April or May consistently costs more on popular routes. |
Flash Sales | Year-round — typically 48 hours | Periodic 48-hour sales on select routes, announced through the newsletter and the Air Transat deals page. Discounts of 10–25% on base fares are common. Newsletter subscribers see these first. |
Shoulder Season Travel | May, September, late January | Flying in these weeks rather than peak summer or peak holiday winter typically delivers lower base fares on both transatlantic and southern routes. Midweek departures within these windows are cheaper still. |
Promotional fare availability changes frequently. Check Air Transat's Canadian deals page or GrabOn Canada closer to your intended travel window for the latest confirmed offers.

If your route or schedule doesn't line up with Air Transat's leisure-focused network — or if you need more flexibility, daily frequency, or connections beyond Montreal and Toronto — Air Canada covers the full Canadian market. Its Aeroplan program gives you a way to earn points on every flight and redeem them against future bookings, and its codeshare network means you're not starting your trip from a limited list of departure cities. Look for Air Canada promo codes to check whether a sale fare is available before you book a flight.
Flair Airlines is the sharper value comparison for short-haul domestic travel, routes like Toronto to Calgary or Vancouver, where Air Transat's domestic schedule is thin. Flair's base fares on these corridors are frequently lower than anything in the Air Transat domestic range, and if you're travelling with a personal item only, the total cost gap can be significant. Check Flair Airline Offers before booking any domestic leg to see if there's a current seat sale active on your route.
Air Transat made its inaugural flight on November 14, 1987, travelling from Montreal to Acapulco aboard a Lockheed L-1011. The airline grew out of Transat A.T. Inc., founded in the early 1980s by Jean-Marc Eustache, Lina De Cesare, and Philippe Sureau as a travel wholesaler specializing in Quebec-to-France travel. Today Air Transat is headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, and operates as a business unit of Transat A.T. Inc., trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the ticker TRZ. The airline's fleet of Airbus aircraft serves more than 65 destinations in 35 countries, with primary hubs at Montréal-Trudeau International Airport and Toronto Pearson Airport, and seasonal departures from Quebec City, Ottawa, Halifax, Vancouver, and Calgary. It carried approximately 5.4 million passengers in fiscal year 2025 and employs around 5,000 people. Air Transat was voted the 2025 World's Best Leisure Airline at the Skytrax World Airline Awards, the seventh time it has received the award.

It depends entirely on where you are flying. On routes to South destinations, Florida, the US, and domestic flights within Canada, Eco Budget includes only a personal item—no overhead carry-on has been included since the rule change. However, on long-haul routes to Europe, Morocco, Peru, and Brazil, the Eco Budget fare is much more generous: it still includes both a free 10 kg overhead carry-on bag AND your first 23 kg checked bag completely free.
You have 24 hours from the moment of booking to cancel for a 100% refund to your original payment method, provided your flight departs 7 or more days out. After 24 hours, refunds depend on your ticket tier. Eco Flex offers free cancellations, while Eco Budget and Eco Standard carry a cancellation penalty of C$200 (Domestic/US/South) to C$300 (Europe) per direction, with the remaining balance issued as a travel credit valid for 12 months. Under the active Summer 2026 Promo, if you book an Eco Standard or Club Standard ticket by September 1, 2026, for travel departing by September 8, 2026, standard cancellation fees are completely waived for a full travel credit.
Air Transat suspended its legacy BonBon rewards program. A brand-new loyalty program created in partnership with Desjardins Group and Visa is scheduled to launch in the second half of 2026, introducing a fresh suite of co-branded travel credit cards. In the meantime, you can seamlessly redeem VIPorter points for Air Transat-operated flights to Europe and the Caribbean by searching directly on flyporter.com thanks to their joint venture.
Air Transat is classified as a "Large Airline" under Canada’s Air Passenger Protection Regulations (APPR). If your flight is delayed or cancelled due to reasons within the airline's control (and not for safety), you are entitled to cash compensation based on your arrival delay at your final destination: C$400 (3 to 6 hours), C$700 (6 to 9 hours), or C$1,000 (9+ hours). This is in addition to required rebooking or a full refund. If the delay is weather-related (outside carrier control), compensation isn't required, but they must still rebook you promptly. Claims must be submitted via airtransat.com within one year of the event.
On domestic Canadian, US, and sun routes, Eco Budget strips out the carry-on. If you need an overhead bag, paying the individual add-on fee on a Budget ticket often equals or exceeds the cost of upgrading to Eco Standard outright. Eco Standard also allows ticket changes for a fee, whereas Eco Budget modifications carry steep penalties. Always map out your exact baggage needs first: if you are travelling with just a backpack, Eco Budget wins. If you need overhead space or a checked bag, Eco Standard usually provides better all-in value.
January is widely known in the Canadian travel industry as Wave Month. The period when leisure airlines and travel agents offer their most competitive packages on sun destinations and Europe bookings. Air Transat participates with seat sales, package deals, and promotional codes during this window, targeting winter sun travel and summer Europe departures. If you didn't book over the holidays and you're planning a trip for spring or next winter, January is the highest-value booking window of the year for Air Transat routes. Check the Air Transat deals page at airtransat.com or GrabOn Canada in the first two weeks of January for active offers.
